Luxury and mass market. What is the difference between them, and is it acceptable to combine them?

We live in a world where clothing tells a lot about a person, if not simply telling us everything about them in one glance. Nowadays, store shelves are constantly crowded with hundreds of similar products in a variety of different price ranges. Buyers are reasonably questioning, wondering whether it’s worth it to buy women’s fall scarves for $20 or for $150? After all, the products look the same and are even cut from fabric of the same composition.

If one were to buy women’s fall scarf options of a luxury brand compared to a mass market option, how will they be different?

If you wanted, for example, to buy women’s fall scarves, but are thinking about how much to spend—either $15 for a more “ordinary” product or $150 for a scarf made by a luxury brand—then you will need to know exactly how the branded products differ from those that are mass market produced.

Manufacturers of cheaper goods save money on fabrics and means of production. On the contrary, the creators of branded clothing value their reputation and only strive to create the best possible products. Therefore, they always choose more expensive fabrics for their products, ones that are beautiful in their appearance and pleasant to the touch. These materials may be delicate and require special care, also meaning they are not very durable, but they will be positively luxurious in all aspects and will not look at all cheap.

With mass-produced items, inexpensive synthetic fabrics are also more frequently used. Externally, these may look like the quality is more natural, but they will have very different physical properties. For example, in some cheaper clothing items, acrylic is used to replace wool. Wool may be warm, but the person who finds themselves wearing the acrylic-based clothing will constantly sweat.

Sometimes, fabrics may have an identical composition of base components. However, it’s still possible that the quality of the items produced from the fabrics in this case may be very different. This all depends on the quality of the material itself. For example, the nicest kind of cotton is Egyptian cotton. Thanks to the length of its fibres, Egyptian cotton is incredibly soft and thin, yet it remains dense and durable. Items made from this type of cotton are quite expensive, but they do not lose their quality nor appearance even after repeated washes.

Short staple cotton, however, is a low quality material. Even though the cotton is still the primary fabric being used, an item made of this particular cotton will quickly lose its colour and shape, and it is nearly guaranteed to be covered with pellets after several washes.

In the factories where inexpensive clothing is produced, the fabric is very often cut incorrectly. Manufacturers of cheap clothes are looking for ways to save money all the time and in every way possible—this is why tailoring technology also suffers. If you have ever been one to engage in sewing and cutting, whether for work or as a hobby, then you know that the patterns on the fabric must be laid out in the direction of the share thread. Otherwise, it’s likely that the article being cut and sewn will stretch and deform. This is the primary reason why mass-market clothing often twists after a few washes and is very difficult to fold properly.

Manufacturers of cheap clothing are also trying to save money on seams, lining, belts, and even pockets. Due to this, a lot of the jackets that are mass-produced do not have lining, the elastic in mass market belts is not fixed, there are no hidden stitches, and threads often stick out of the seams.

The manufacturers of clothing for the mass market use cheap accessories as well. Short-lived buttons, flimsy rhinestones, and plastic zippers are all signs of cheap clothing. When even the accessories look cheap, this can spoil the look of any clothing item.

On the other hand, the manufacturers of branded clothing prefer horn and metal buttons; strong, densely-woven zippers; and elegant hand-made décor elements instead of cheap plastic.

So, if you were to buy women’s fall scarf accessories of mass-market quality, then those scarves will be very wrinkled after even just one wash, threads will likely stick out of them, and they may even be covered with pellets after the very first time you try to clean them. Such a scarf will be difficult to wear—and if you’re the type to consider a scarf as the main emphasis of a woman’s style, then all of this should tell you that buying cheap is a bad idea.

In money-saving sense, though, there still actually are things that you can buy in the mass market, and there are even fashionistas who give advice on how to do it correctly.

How acceptable is it to mix and match luxury and mass-market clothing in one look?

Fashion and style are two concepts that should not be confused. Unlike fashion, a person’s style is unique, impossible to repeat, and constant. Fashion, however, appears and disappears. It returns and evolves, and it presents outfits that are both amazing at times and downright stupid and tasteless at others. Style does not come and go along with fashion. It may use fashion trends, but it generally remains unchanged. It is important for every lady to be stylish, but not to become a victim of fashion.

The direct correlation “expensive is fashionable” has long since disappeared. Today, manufacturers of inexpensive brands strive to keep abreast of all fashion trends and, inspired by catwalk looks, create their similar duplicates in record time. Occasionally, there is also the opposite situation—when luxury brands find ideas inspired by street fashion.

How to properly combine mass market and branded items

It is believed that branded items look significantly better than clothing designed for the mass consumer. In many ways, this is often the case. This significant difference in appearance is achieved due to high-quality materials, well-measured patterns, and the cut that allows the clothes to fit perfectly on the targeted figure. However, there are two "buts" here.

First, even among such mass clothing manufacturers as H&M, Uniqlo, and others, you can still find things that will fit very well in any wardrobe. These clothes are very flexible in their many style uses and can be dressed up as well as dressed down.

Everyone wants to be stylish and chic, and everyone loves new clothes, but not everyone can afford a large number of branded clothes. In this case, you can still achieve a chic look by combining expensive and exclusive branded items along with some of the mass-market clothes that are easier to afford.

You can buy certain things in the mass market, but buy luxury scarves

Two of the simplest items to buy in a low-price store are plain turtlenecks and plain tops. These are essential in every wardrobe—and, in combination with other garments, they are practically indistinguishable from luxury ones. You can also buy a luxury scarf and wear it with mass-market jeans as a fantastic accent to what otherwise may seem bland on its own.

What shouldn't be purchased in the mass market? If you buy a belt, the leather should be of good quality

This is worth giving up the inexpensive jewelry, bags, and shoes. Chunky, cheap jewelry does nothing for a woman’s appearance or style. However, high-quality products made of genuine leather emphasize a woman’s excellent taste, along with her status, and remain trending for a long time. When you buy belts, leather of different qualities may be used by the manufacturer, but this is one of the most important accessories in a man's look. That is why we advise men to avoid cheaper options and strictly buy leather clothes and accessories from luxury brands.

You should not buy baggy sweaters or t-shirts with dubious inscriptions and prints, nor should you waste money on pants and jackets that give you a strange silhouette or very short skirts or shorts. These clothes will only give you a look of utter vulgarity, not style. We also recommend against purchasing dresses that are made from knitted fabrics. These typically do not fit well, and they quickly lose their appearance. If you want to buy a knitted dress, it is much better to buy a branded dress. It will fit perfectly on your figure and be guaranteed to hold up better due to the higher quality materials.

Buy designer handbags online—this gives you more options

There are some goods that are better to buy online, especially since there are more choices. Often, the prices of branded items bought online is much lower too. This primarily applies to bags. If you go to a boutique in Milan, you will see bags listed at very high prices. The bags made by luxury brands that you can find online may also be bought at a high price, but they will still be slightly cheaper.
