Kiton Sizing Guide: How Kiton Suits, Shirts and Shoes Fit

A Kiton jacket is one of the most expensive ready-to-wear garments in menswear. Retail prices for a single jacket start in the thousands of dollars, so ordering the wrong size is an expensive mistake. The good news: Kiton sizing follows clear rules once you know them.

How Kiton fits: the part no size chart tells you

Kiton is a Neapolitan house, and its tailoring is built soft. Jackets are mostly unstructured, with a light floating canvas and the famous shirt-style shoulder (spalla camicia). Reviewers describe a Kiton jacket as fitting almost like a sweater, following the body rather than holding a rigid shape (Gentleman's Gazette).

Three consequences matter for sizing:

1. It can feel small. Because there is little padding, the jacket sits close to the body. Gentleman's Gazette notes that Kiton jackets "typically run small" and that two jackets in the same size can differ in body and sleeve length.

2. The silhouette is now slimmer. Recent collections lean younger and trimmer than the generous Kiton cuts of the 1990s and 2000s. If you are buying a newer piece, do not rely on an old Kiton in your closet.

3. The shoulder decides the size. A tailor can shorten sleeves, take in the waist or hem trousers. A soft Neapolitan shoulder is very hard to alter. Choose the size where the shoulder seam ends at your natural shoulder, then tailor the rest.

Kiton suit and jacket size chart

Kiton labels suits, blazers, outerwear and vests in Italian sizes. Canada uses the same system as the US: your jacket size is roughly your chest measurement in inches. To convert, subtract 10 from the Italian size.

Some labels also carry a length or drop code. "R" means regular length, "L" long and "S" short. A number such as 6, 7 or 8 is the drop: the difference between jacket and trouser size in a suit. A standard drop 7 suit in size 52 pairs a 52 jacket with trousers cut for a smaller waist.

Example. You wear a 42 Regular at a Canadian department store. Your Kiton size is 52. If you are broad-chested or between sizes, try 54 as well, because of the close, soft fit described above.

Kiton shirt size chart

Kiton dress shirts are sized by collar in centimetres, from 37 to 46. Casual shirts may come in letters. Kiton shirts are cut closer than a classic North American dress shirt, with back darts. A retailer that stocks them describes the cut as nearer to a "modern" fit than a regular one .

Kiton pants size chart

Kiton tailored trousers usually carry Italian sizes. Some casual lines, like chinos and drawstring trousers, use waist sizes in inches. Subtract about 16 from the Italian size to estimate your waist in inches. The rise is regular, not high, so the waistband sits near your natural waist.

Treat this as a starting point. When in doubt, measure the waistband of trousers that fit you well and ask us for the flat waist measurement of the pair you want.

How do Kiton jeans fit?

Kiton jeans are labelled in waist inches, from 30 to 42. Most of the pairs we stock are 98% cotton and 2% elastane with a slim or contemporary slim cut. Take your usual jeans waist. The stretch eases about half a size with wear, so a snug first fitting is normal. See men's jeans.

Kiton knitwear, polos and T-shirts

Knitwear, polos, hoodies and T-shirts come in letters, S to 3XL. They run slightly trimmer than North American letters. If you sit between two sizes or like a relaxed look, go up one. Fine cashmere relaxes a little with wear; cotton piqué does not.

Kiton sizes shoes in UK sizes, with half sizes from UK 6 to 12. The official chart from Kiton converts them like this:

Two tips save most returns:

• Buy by the UK number, not the EU number. EU conversions differ between brands. Kiton maps UK 8 to EU 42, while Santoni maps UK 8 to EU 43. If your old shoes say "43", check which UK size that brand meant.

• Knit sneakers forgive, leather loafers do not. The Kiton FITS sneaker has a stretch-knit upper that wraps the foot, so take your usual size. Leather loafers stretch slightly in width but never in length, so they should feel snug, not tight, at the toes.

Kiton belts

Kiton belts are labelled by length in centimetres, from 75 to 125 in steps of 5. A common rule is to choose about 5 cm (2 in) more than your trouser waist. A 34-inch waist (86 cm) usually takes a 90 belt.

How to measure yourself at home

You need a soft tape measure and two minutes.

1. Chest: Measure around the fullest part of the chest, under the arms, over a thin shirt. The number in inches is your Canadian jacket size. Add 10 for Kiton.

2. Collar: Measure around the base of the neck and add one finger of room. Convert inches to centimetres (× 2.54).

3. Waist: Measure where you wear your trousers, not at the navel.

4. Foot: Stand on paper, mark heel and longest toe, and measure in centimetres. Compare with the shoe you fit best.

Does Kiton run small? Often, yes, in tailoring. The soft, close cut makes Kiton jackets feel smaller than a structured jacket in the same size. If you are between sizes, try the larger one and tailor it in.

What is Italian size 52 in Canada? Italian 52 is a Canadian and US 42 jacket. Italian 50 is a 40, and 54 is a 44.

What is a size 42 in Canada? For jackets, a Canadian 42 means a chest of about 42 inches, which is Italian 52 at Kiton. For shoes, Canadian 42 is not a size; that number is European.

Is size 40 M or L? A Canadian 40 jacket (Italian 50) usually corresponds to L in Kiton letter sizing.

Are Kiton shoes true to size? Kiton labels shoes in UK sizes, so take your Canadian size minus one. Knit sneakers are forgiving; leather loafers should fit snug.

What is Italian shirt size 41 in US? A 41 cm collar is a 16-inch collar.
