The label number is a waist size in inches. Dutch retailer Vousten publishes these indicative body-waist measurements. Each pair is hand-finished, so allow a centimetre either way.

These figures run about two inches above the label number. So the label size usually matches the size on your other jeans better than a tape measure around your body. When unsure, measure a pair you already own, as shown below.

The Bard is the starting point for most customers. It sits at a regular rise, stays slim through the thigh and narrows slightly to the ankle. UK retailer OD's notes it has roughly 2–3 cm more room in the seat and thigh than the Nick.

The Nick Slim sits lower on the hip and is closer through the leg. It suits slim builds and men who want a sharp line with boots or sneakers.

The most useful rule in this guide: if the Nick fits your waist but grips your thighs, do not size up. Switch to the Bard in the same waist size. Sizing up only makes the waistband gape.

Jacob Cohen Scott fit

The Scott is a slim carrot shape with a cropped length of about 76 cm. It is designed to end above the ankle, so tall men may find it too short to hem to a full length.

Jacob Cohen Eduard fit

Stretch, shrinkage and the first week

Most Jacob Cohen denim is stretch denim, typically around 98% cotton and 2% elastane. Some styles are 100% cotton.

• Stretch denim: buy your true size. It should feel fitted on day one. The curved waistband settles within about 3–5 wears and gives roughly half an inch (OD's).

• 100% cotton denim: still buy your true size, but expect it to feel firm for a few weeks. OD's reports about 2–3% shrinkage at the first wash, so do not choose a pair with zero room at the waist.

• Between two sizes: take the larger one in stretch denim, your true size in rigid cotton.

What length are Jacob Cohen jeans?

Bard and Nick come unhemmed with an inseam of about 86 cm, or 34 inches. Most men will have them shortened. A few tips:

• Hem them after the first wash if they are 100% cotton, so you do not lose length later.

• For slim fits, a short break or no break looks cleanest.

• Wear the shoes you will wear most often to the tailor.

• Scott is already cropped, so check the length before buying if you are over 183 cm (6 ft).
