Long men’s scarves - new trend for the season

Irrespective of fashion trends, there are some elements of one’s wardrobe that are considered universal. Such an element is undoubtedly a men's scarf. Given the difference in styles, there is a large variety of scarves available on the market today. First of all a good scarf should protect its owner from the wind, cold or even sunlight, and only then perform the function of decoration.

Historical context

Have you ever wondered when and where did the men’s scarves first appeared? Where did they wear it? How did men influence the formation of a scarf as an integral part of one’s wardrobe? Archaeologists claim that for the first time this piece of clothing appeared in ancient China more than two millennia ago. In the 70’s of the last century, scientists found a tomb of the first Chinese emperor of the Qin dynasty, dated 210 BC. More than 7.5 thousand clay figures depicting soldiers were buried in the mound. Interestingly, on the neck of every warrior there was a scarf! In ancient China men of different social classes used scarves to protect them from the cold and wind.

The legionaries of Ancient Rome acted similarly – they used some kind of men’s wrap scarf. From them, the tradition of wearing men's oversized scarf passed to the Croats, and at the end of the 17th century reached Paris. An ardent admirer of the new fashion was the “Sun King” Louis XIV. He was known to love long and bulky men’s scarves.

In the 20th century, the popularity of men's large scarves was promoted by the great Italian actor Marcello Mastroianni.

Variety in styles

All men are different, so the types of scarves that they prefer also vary. If we are interested in extra long scarves for men, there is a number of styles to consider.

Casual style

An ordinary or everyday scarf is the simplest, yet very popular type. It is characterized by medium or small knitting, without much texture and lack of decor. Multi-functionality is one of the main advantages. It blends wonderfully with outerwear and is very comfortable to wear. The main material selection includes wool, cotton fabrics, and less commonly cashmere.

Business style

The business style of a men's scarf is exclusively rectangular. Select expensive, delicate fabrics. Winter scarves are cashmere, made of alpaca and fine wool. Silk, cotton, chiffon, and linen scarves are a perfect summer option. For special occasions, men are invited to tie a satin scarf or shawl. Colour choices are often dark or white colours. Classic business suits form a perfect tandem with business style scarves. As a rule, they have plain colours or a soft print. When wearing such scarves, men look noble and dignified.

Romantic style

This style of men’s long scarves is usually preferred by creative people. This is a fashionable, attractive and exquisite item made of silk, cotton, linen or fine wool. This kind of scarf is decorated with fringe elements and has an interesting pattern, often in checkered style.

Colour of choice of a modern men's scarf

When acquiring a men's scarf it is important to choose the right colour. Blue and grey are an impeccable classic choice in choosing the right colour. There are also plain and checkered options available. If there is uncertainty about the choice of colour, then dark shades of blue are always a safe option. A white long or extra long scarf is also a classic. This colour is especially beneficial in contrast with darker colours of hair. Black colour may make you look older, although its advantage is that it is not easily soiled. Scarves of bright colours or with patterns emphasize one’s individuality.

Combining colours

Remember that neutral colours are often chosen for the outerwear - snow-white, black, brown, blue, grey. Consider matching a scarf with your jacket, but choosing a lighter or darker shade to emphasize this accessory.

How to tie a man's scarf

There are several basic rules for tying a men's scarf:

  • Make sure that when the scarf is tied it is comfortable to wear and does not create any discomfort.
  • The way of tying should be chosen based on the length of the scarf and the fabric from which it is made.
  • Do not tie the scarf too tight.

Following these rules, while having several winter and summer scarves in your wardrobe will enable you to always look trendy and stylish.
